Ryan Timms Scores Season Opening Win at Volusia Speedway Park
Taking advantage of a USCS Race at Volusia Speedway Park to get laps at the high speed ½ mile prior to the impending World of Outlaws Series and All Star Circuit of Champions events, Ryan Timms exceeded personal expectations as he picked up a dominating win on Friday night before charging from 17th to fifth during Saturday’s finale.
“I had never raced Volusia Speedway Park prior to last weekend, so I went into the weekend just aiming for a couple of Top-5’s,” Ryan Timms said. “After hot laps and time trials, I knew we had a really good car on Friday night, but I didn’t know we would be that strong.”
Timms got off to a stout start on Friday night as he timed the CITGO/Hampel Oil/Mystic Lubricants backed No. 5T entry in second fastest in his qualifying group before pocketing a second-place finish in his heat race.
Finding himself third on the starting grid for the 25-lap feature event, Timms made a big move in the first turn as he slipped into the lead and never looked back. Out front, the Oklahoma City, OK native showed that he was the class of the field as he quickly gapped the competition and wasted no time reaching the back of the pack.
Able to navigate with precision through traffic, Timms went on to pick up the win by over 7.5 seconds and lapped up to eighth place in doing so.
Back in action on Saturday night for the final night of USCS action, Timms battled an issue in time trials that relegated him to sixth fastest in his group aboard the Premier Truck Group/WFX/IWX Motor Freight entry.
Lining up in the third row of his heat race, Timms garnered as many event points as he could as he worked his way to a fourth-place finish in his heat.
Forced into a ‘B’ Main after narrowly missing the points cut off for the feature, Timms handled business from the pole as he raced to the win and successfully punched his ticket into the feature event.
Taking the green flag from the 17th starting position, Timms was patient in the early laps as he picked his spots carefully racing in dirty air. Racing into the Top-10 on the 15th lap, Timms got stronger as laps continued to click off.
Jumping into seventh with just seven laps left in the race, a Top-5 finish was now feasible as he closed in on the cars running in fifth and sixth.
With two to go, Timms was able to race into fifth and close his weekend out with an impressive charge and a fifth-place finish.
“Once we were able to figure out our issues in qualifying Saturday, we were back to where we were Friday, but we were in a really deep hole,” Timms added. “30-laps wasn’t enough to get to the front from 17th, but we had a really fast car and had a really good run to fifth. I am happy with it and am looking forward to getting back to Volusia Speedway Park next week with the 410ci car. I also really want to thank my guys for all of their hard work, and all of our partners for supporting us in 2023.”
